Vasic Zen is one of the core members of the Arrow Squad.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Born Vasic Duvnjak. Took the name of his grandfather, Zie Zen, as an adult arrow. Teleported out of the womb so his special ability as a natural Traveler was immediately reported to the Psy Council. He had training even in infancy, at home, and went to the academy at age 4.

“While I wasn’t placed into full Arrow training till I was four, I had military-level instructors almost from the cradle.” He sometimes considered how his unprotected mind might have been molded. What saved his sanity was the memory of his later childhood, when he’d been no model pupil. “Designation Tk-V is rare enough that the Council was notified at once of my birth.” . . . I teleported out of the womb”... (Shield of Winter)

His Duvnjak parents abandoned him to the squad, probably for money. His parents gave him to The Arrow Squad at age four. He had done nothing wrong, harmed none with his abilities. For a long time, he waited for them to come get him, but they never did.

Arrow Training[]

He was taken for training at age 4. He had his bones broken repeatedly and was tortured in order to learn to obey. His childhood is one of the most brutal of the Arrows.

Patton was the Arrow who locked Vasic’s Traveler ability in his mind in order to be able to train him. Patton, the only other Tk-V Vasic had ever met. His mentor, Patton, had doled out many of the worst punishments, his years on Jax having erased any empathic center he may have once had. A few of the other Arrows had tried to ameliorate the viciousness of Vasic’s training, but they’d been limited in what they could do, the rebellion that had begun to simmer in the ranks not yet strong enough to emerge from the shadows. (Shield of Winter) Later, Patton was terminated by Ming’s medical goons, because he was too lost in the Jax drug.

Jax[]

Many arrows were dosed far too much Jax, under Ming LeBon’s reign of terror. As a younger Arrow, Vasic Zen was also dosed too much.

He’d been forced to work under the influence of the drug for dozens of missions and whenever Ming LeBon required his teleportation skills. As a result of the latter, he’d had more Jax in his system as a teenager than most experienced members of the squad. He’d escaped a permanent reset by three injections at most. (Shield of Winter)

Hiwever, he eventually learned to teleport out the harmful chemical from the dosage. He ’ported out the drug while it was still in the delivery system. Later, Judd Lauren’s pretended incapacitation convinced Ming to stop using Jax on most of the Arrows. “Later, thanks to a subterfuge by Judd, all Arrows were taken off it.” (Shield of Winter)

Life with Silence[]

He was an Arrow living under the strictest most heinous application of the Silence Protocol. It was difficult to condition him, because he was/is intelligent, stubborn, and deeply loyal and loving. Some of his trainers were brutal, especially Patton. Once conditioned to Silence and trained in assassination, he was considered Ming LeBon's most deadly weapon, but he was never truly Silent. He cared, was a friend to Aden Kai, and did what good he could. Forced to work under the former leader, he was injected with more Jax during his teenage years than most adults.

He has helped a small group of Arrows to defect from the PsyNet. He is haunted by the one's he has killed.

Physical Appearance[]

Vasic is 6' 4" and muscular, with soft black hair and cool gray eyes. Ivy often describes them as silver frost. He has a deep, resonating voice.

His left arm is a computronic gauntlet, a prototype, that he let medics implant during his destructive years. It was malfunctioning and often causing problems. He gets it removed with a risky surgery.

He is of Croatian and Chinese descent on his maternal side and Caucasian descent on his paternal side, but shares little resemblance to his great-grandfather Zie Zen.

Over six feet tall with broad shoulders, his posture was unyielding, his stillness absolute, his eyes a chill gray, and his hair black. His uniform, too, was black, stark against the backdrop: rugged pants, a long-sleeved T-shirt of some high-tech and likely bulletproof material that hugged the muscle of his arms, a lightweight armored vest that covered his chest and back as well as the lower part of his neck, heavy combat boots, what appeared to be an electronic gauntlet strapped to his left arm. (Shield of Winter)

Personality and Traits[]

He is a protector at heart, blaming himself for every life he had to take. For most of his Silent life, he is trying to repent. He has a sharp mind and a strong conscience. He was the one to kill Henry Scott.

Despite not wanting his relationship with Ivy to be of public consumption, he becomes the face of the Arrow Squad during the fight against the invasion.

Abilities and Skills[]

He is a 7.9 Tk-V, a Traveler, a born teleporter that can even lock on to faces as well as locations. His telepathy is just below 6. Because of his sub-designation, he is more powerful than most Cardinal Tk-Psy.

The man had to be the rarest of the rare—a Traveler. Most strong telekinetics could ’port, but not even a cardinal Tk could do so with such effortless speed. Only a true teleporter. A Traveler. Designation Tk. Subdesignation V. But where had this Traveler brought her? (Hostage to Pleasure (book))

He developed his innate porting abilities far beyond the norm, to be able to lock in on an image and transport it long distance from a distance, in mere seconds: “Vasic’s skill; being born with an ability was only the start — what Vasic could do, it spoke of intense training, concentration, and intelligence.” (SoW)

Family[]

His great-grandfather is Zie Zen, a statesman and mastermind planner, from whom he also took his last name as a tribute. He bonds with and marries Ivy Jane and her dog Rabbit, and they adopt a young Arrow boy, Tavish. Otherwise, he considers The Arrow Squad his family, and Aden Kai his brother and squad leader.

Relationships[]

Aden: his "brother" in everything but blood, Vasic would do anything for him and vice versa. Being in on the secret of Aden's ability, they share a close bond.

Arrows: He is close to all of them, and now with Ivy, gives them hope for another, better, life.

Ashaya Aleine and her family and all the DarkRiver leopards

Basically, Vasic is trusted by everyone he helps, and that list is long.

Trivia[]

  • He is one of ten people to possess one of Zie Zen's coins, his "inner circle."

Quotes[]

  • "You don't have the right to be tired. When you can write her name on a memorial, when you can honor her blood, then you have earned the right." - Dorian to Vasic (Hostage to Pleasure, ch.27)
  • "I suggest the immediate and repeated application of physical pain interspersed with psychological punishment to break him. Only then can he be molded into an Arrow." Private PsyMed report on Arrow trainee Vasic, age 4 years 2 months (Shield of Winter, ch.11)
