Hawke Snow is the SnowDancer alpha mated to the cardinal X-Psy Sienna Lauren, they are the main protagonists in the tenth book of the main series, Kiss of Snow.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

When he was seven years old, Hawke was walking through the den with his mother when all of a sudden, he took off running. She found him in the nursery, laughing with a two-year old girl named Theresa, who he called Rissa,[1] and they became instant best friends. It was the earliest the pack healer at the time had known anyone to find their mate.[2] Over time, he knew one day they'd be mates, but she died three years later in and avalanche.[3] For a month he didn't speak or do anything but sit by her grave.[4] From then on, he felt as if he lost a piece of himself and believed his chance of having a mate died with his five year old sweetheart.[3]

As kids, Hawke would lead the trouble and Riley Kincaid would make sure they didnā€™t get caught.[5] When he was nine years old, he had excessive amounts of energy and incredible stamina. They tried running him tired, but he could outlast everyone except for Garrick, the alpha at the time. Garrick ended up having him play messenger between sentries for Garrick. Most of the messages were created just to give him something to do, but in the process he learned from the soldiers and connected him with people he'd one day lead.[6]

Juvenile[]

Once, he, Cooper Shaw, Riaz Delgado, and Riley Kincaid were caught with certain movies and had, had to scrub toilets for a month.[7]

He'd been a bit of a hot-head[8] until he turned fifteen and his father, Tristan, was abducted by Psy and brainwashed over the course of a week[9] before he was found in a way that led SnowDancer to believe he'd had a bad fall.[10] He'd been a lieutenant and turned on his alpha; neither of them survived.[6] Tristan's submissive mate, Aren, didn't survive for long after losing him, she went to sleep one night and never woke up.[10]

SnowDancer[]

After his dad's death, Hawke was made the SnowDancer alpha at age 15. Although he had the support of the pack, he relied heavily on Riley for advice.[11] His wolf is always very close to the surface as he'd had to rely heavily on it's strength and black and white way of seeing the world as a very young alpha.

Despite his hatred for the Psy, Hawke took in a family of Psy defectors, the Laurens. The adults - Judd, Walker, and even 16 year old Sienna - were prepared to be killed outright for trespassing on wolf territory in the hopes that the pack would at least have mercy on the children - Marlee and Toby.

Mating[]

Sienna drove Hawke to distraction with her juvenile stunts, which she was finally free to do once she was no longer Silent, and the sparks between them grew over the years. He tried to fight the attraction between them due to the age gap, but things finally reached a point where he couldn't countenance sharing intimate skin privileges with anyone else. They fell in love even as Pure Psy waged war on SnowDancer and Sienna approached synergy.

In the midst of the battle, Sienna used her ability to enter Hawke's mind and access his link to his packmates as alpha. With this knowledge, she protected SnowDancers from her cold fire as it decimated the Psy army. Hawke believed he couldn't give her the mating bond since Teresa would have been his mate.

The pack built them a small cabin to celebrate their relationship as no one wanted to see their alpha go through life alone. Put up in 12 hours by rotating shifts, it's one large room with an alcove at the back and a sliding wooden door.  The kitchenetteā€™s to the left and  to the right is a laz fireplace and a fluffy white rug.  The rest is taken up by a huge bed with a wrought-iron headboard. The leopard alpha Lucas Hunter had snuck in and left a pair of fur-lined, Hawke-sized handcuffs hanging from the headboard. Meant to be a reprieve from constant responsibility and a chance for privacy, the area's off-limits if either Hawke or Sienna are in the vicinity.[12]

Physical Appearance[]

Hawke is muscular, lethal, and widely considered sexy. He has silver-gold hair, which is a mix of his parents,[13] and pale blue eyes that are the same color in either form.

Personality and Traits[]

Hawke has a wicked sense humor. He hates being indoors even more than most changelings, but since taking care of the pack in other ways is just as important as physical security, he learned to do it well.[14]

He had been full of rage, but since Sienna came into the den, the poison of that anger drained away.  It still remains as a lethal edge, but far healthier.[15]

Abilities and Skills[]

Hawke is very strong and extremely fast in either form, even by changeling standards. In the entire SnowDancer pack the only person he can spar with without holding back is his second, Riley Kincaid, who is both highly dominant and physically larger then Hawke.

He can block empaths from reading his emotions.[16]

The wild wolves see Hawke as their alpha, too.[17]

Relationships[]

Anthony Kyriakus[]

Hawke will never like nor trust Anthony, but he did have grudging respect because he'd made contingency plans to mitigate the fallout after his own possible assassination.[18]

Ben Stone[]

This pup is one of Hawke's favourite people in the den.[19]

Indigo Riviere[]

Indigoā€™s one of Hawkeā€™s most trusted friends, one of only two people - the being Riley - who can tell him to shut up without getting their asses kicked for it.[19]

Judd Lauren[]

Hawke knew how dangerous Judd was from the moment the Psy assassin asked for sanctuary and so didn't trust him until Judd proved his loyalty, first by helping hunt the serial killer Santano Enrique for taking a SnowDancer and then by helping protect the pack against Psy attacks.[20] He knew how many challenges for dominance Judd fought[17] and that despite the telekinetic's lethality, none of his opponents suffered any serious harm.[21] When Judd saved Andrew Kincaid's life after being shot by a SnowDancer soldier, Hawke made him a lieutenant.

Lucas Hunter[]

Hawke's relationship with his fellow predatory alpha was initially cautious and they slowly developed respect for each other, choosing to communicate as neighbours instead of competing with each other. That's not to say they aren't competitive on a personal level, but they weren't about to pit their packs against each other.

Trust was built over time and solidified into a lasting alliance when they cooperated to hunt Santano Enrique. They often commiserate with - or mock - each other over the responsibilities that come with running a pack. They have an understanding when it comes to interpack relationships and the pupcubs, which is remarkable considering how protective and possessive alphas are of their people.

Nikita Duncan[]

Hawke will never like nor trust Nikita, but he did have grudging respect because she'd made contingency plans to mitigate the fallout after her own possible assassination.[18]

Riley Kincaid[]

Theyā€™ve been friends since they were kids.  When Hawke was seven years old, they gorged on chocolate cake until they puked.[22]

Sascha Duncan[]

The Cardinal empath threw Hawke's views of the Psy for a loop.[17] He enjoyed flirting with her because of how it riled up her mate, the alpha of DarkRiver, Lucas Hunter. Sienna thinks he felt drawn to her because she reminded him of Rissa, who'd been sweet and kind.[1]

Sienna Lauren[]

Sienna had a particular ability to drive Hawke to distraction ever since she came to SnowDancer at age 16 and pulled stunts that even he had to admire,[17] even as they caused him no end of grief. He never uses their bond to track her unless itā€™s an emergency.[23]

Toby Lauren[]

Their relationship's a bit complicated since Hawke is far older than Toby and his alpha as well as his brother-in-law, although Hawke is careful about which role he takes in his interactions with Toby. When the situation is about family and Sienna, Hawke avoids pulling rank on Toby. When it comes to Toby's development and well-being, Hawke takes on the alpha and mentor role and is very proud of Toby.[16]

Trivia[]

  • He likes banana bran muffins.[24]
  • There are certain parallels from Hawke's father to Mikhail, the father of Valentin Nikolaev. A connection is up for discussion.
  • His last name's one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in the pack.[4]

Quotes[]

"Hawke will do whatever it takes to keep SnowDancer at the top of the food chain." -Judd Lauren[25]

Hawke was so close to his animal that at times, it wasn't clear who or what was looking out of those pale eyes. -Judd[17]

"You're in my every breath and every thought, intertwined so deep inside me that love's not a strong enough word - you have my devotion, your name branded on my soul, my wolf yours to command. A hundred years? It'll never be enough. I want eternity." -Hawke to Sienna[4]

Appearances[]

Slave to Sensation[]

When one of Hawke's wolves, Brenna Kincaid, is kidnapped by a Psy serial killer, he wants to declare open season on all Psy, but Lucas gets him to agree to giving the search for her a week, if only because she might be killed just to be rid of any evidence once the Psy know they're being hunted.[26]

Instead of killing Sascha, who's unconscious when the auto-navigation in her car takes her onto SnowDancer land, Hawke lets Lucas know where she is since she smells of him.[27] Later, he picks a fight with Lucas over Sascha, demanding to speak to her. Lucas decks him[28] and, rather than a fight between the two alphas and their lieutenants and sentinels, Hawke stands down and mutters that Lucas should have warned him he'd mated with the Psy, also reminding him that he spared her life. They give each other free passage, turning their alliance into a blood bond.

Despite his dislike of Psy, it's revealed that he gave safe harbour to the Lauren family.

Upon meeting Sascha, Hawke doesn't trust her until she proves she's a cardinal empath and is stunned since he thought they no longer existed. Lucas talks about pulling her out of the PsyNet and Sascha tries to stop Hawke from telling Lucas about the biofeedback requirement. He apologizes, but says he won't let her commit suicide and then have Lucas gunning for him for not helping stop her. Lucas orders the wolves out and forces Sascha to tell him about biofeedback.[29]

Visions of Heat[]

Hawke meets with Lucas to discuss the death of a lynx changeling due to to Jax and how to prevent any potential recreational use among changelings.[30]

Lucas later relays Faith NightStar's warning of seven wolf pups dying in an imminent tunnel collapse. Heeding the warning, a huge crack was discovered in a supporting wall, which had been hidden behind some wall hangings, and repairs begin immediately. Conveying his gratitude to Lucas, asks if "the F-Psy's pretty," to which Lucas replies in the affirmative, and Hawke says that when he meets her, he'll kiss her on her "pretty mouth" in thanks just to jerk Vaughn D'Angelo's chain.[31]

Caressed by Ice[]

To prevent Judd Lauren from leaving SnowDancer, Hawke offers him a position as soldier rather than setting loose an assassin-for-hire on the public. He tries to protect Brenna and dissuade her from her entanglement with Judd, but the effort's halfhearted and he tells her where he station Judd, helping keep her whereabouts from her brothers.[32]

The secret's short-lived because hyenas trespass in Judd's section with an article of clothing that smells of leopard and when Hawke asks Lucas, he tells him that there was an attempt to kidnap some DarkRiver cubs and frame the wolves for it. They suspect the Psy are behind it and Hawke tells Judd that he has to choose where his loyalties lie.[33] He also warns Judd that Brenna's brothers, Andrew and Riley, will gut him if he touches her and that she'll be extremely pissed at him for siding with Hawke over her when he'd ordered her back to the safety of the den.[34]

Hawke and Lucas meet over the attack on the DawnSky deer clan and discuss how to handle the Council's stealth attacks in their region. Hawke proposes a cyberattack on Council finances.[35]

When Brenna confronts Hawke over what he's tasked Judd with in an attempt to protect him, Hawke encourages her to accept Judd's beast as she does her own, forcing her to examine her expectations and perceptions of Judd.[36] She asks him why he's never mated nor taken a long-term lover and he tells her that he'd met the girl who'd have become his mate when they were children, but she died very young.[37]

Since Judd's proven his loyalties and strengths and saved Drew's life, Hawke makes him a lieutenant to settle his place firmly in the hierarchy and forestall anymore unnecessary dominance challenges.[17] This bond allows him to sense when Judd's in trouble while dismantling his Silent conditioning and bring help, only to find it wasn't needed after all.[38]

Hostage to Pleasure[]

Lucas grumbles to Sascha that Hawke sent her a present the other day. He stomped on it and threw it into a ravine, then called Hawke to ask how Sienna was doing.[39]

After young novice soldiers have to kill for the first time - Human Alliance soldiers hunting Ashaya Aleine and her family - Hawke goes to take care of them.[40]

Branded by Fire[]

A soldier reports finding a Psy in serious trouble from fighting mental compulsions programmed by Pure Psy and Hawke allows DarkRiver to get him assistance.[41]

He gives Sienna a soldier position and she's been incredibly polite, mature, and even compliant with him, which worries both Hawke and Riley.[42] He gives Riley advice regarding Mercy Smith and Riley gives him some in return regarding Sienna, as well as a warning he'll gut Hawke if he touches her.[43] The tension between him and Sienna's making her control worse and she goes to stay with DarkRiver for awhile in order to get some distance between them. At first, he doesn't want to let her go,[44] but relents when Lucas tells him how much she's improved while away.[45]

They take their personal frustrations on each other and Hawke wants to remove Riley as DarkRiver liaison due to the friction between him and Mercy, but doesn't because he wants the best for his friend.[22] Despite this, he makes things worse for Riley by assuming that Mercy will join SnowDancer once they mate.[46] When she and Riley are wounded in a bombing, Hawke performs first aid on her, frustrated he can't share strength with her like he can Riley, until Lucas and Tamsyn Ryder arrive. Lucas snarls that he can't have Mercy and Tamsyn snaps at them to fight over her later.

Hawke and Lucas question Adam Garrett, who Riley and Mercy had been saving when hit by the blast, and piece together the machinations of the chairman of the Human Alliance with the help of Bowen Knight.[47]

Bonds of Justice[]

Hawke thinks Naya Hunter's purpose in life will be to make Lucas crazy.[48]

Play of Passion[]

Hawke has to deal with the growing threat of Pure Psy and their surveillance of the pack while performing his usual duties as alpha and negotiating an alliance with WindHaven. As part of this, he has Drew and Indigo work together to work with some of the juveniles after one of them nearly goes rogue.[49] Despite juggling these problems, Hawke still finds time to mess with Drew and be there for Indigo, giving both of them advice.

Sienna and Hawke are clearly attracted to each other, but there's a lot of tension between them, too. It's clear that proximity to him disturbs her control over her abilities.
