Chapter 1[]

Once when he was just a cub, Dorian climbed a tree while he was upset. His mom followed and he tells her that his leopard's angry, frustrated, and sad, clawing at him from the inside because it can't get out since he's latent, meaning he can't shift. She listens to him, hugs him, and tries to comfort him before going to make his favourite dinner.

Soon after alpha Lachlan has him come down and go for a walk with him. Some other changeling kids who were visiting DarkRiver told him that he wasn't a leopard because he can't shift into his animal. Lachlan tells him that he won't lie to him; things will be harder for him, but he's one of the smartest and strongest dominant cubs and could probably be a sentinel some day. Dorian wonders if he could even be one if he doesn't shift and Lachlan reminds him that at least one sentinel is human so can't shift either, moreover, not everyone in DarkRiver can shift, but they're all still part of DarkRiver. He could become good if he works hard and then teaches Dorian how to climb from tree to tree.
